I used to think I had “bad genetics.”
Seriously. For years, I had this weird, dull ache in my lower back that would flare up every month. I bought ergonomic chairs. I did yoga. I went to a chiropractor who cracked my spine like a glow stick. Nothing worked.
Then, one day, I noticed the pattern.
The pain didn’t show up after a workout. It didn’t show up after I sat at my desk too long. It showed up three days before rent was due.
It wasn’t my spine that was misaligned. It was my bank account.
We treat money like it’s just math—numbers on a screen, spreadsheets, budgets. But if you’ve ever stared at a “Declined” message at the grocery store checkout, you know the truth: Money hits you physically. It’s the pit in your stomach. The tight jaw. The exhaustion that sleep doesn’t fix.
If you’re hurting right now and you don’t know why, let’s talk about the physical symptoms of financial stress. Because I promise you, it’s not all in your head. It’s in your tissues.
The “Debt Flu”: It’s a Real Thing
I call it the “Debt Flu.” It’s that heavy, foggy feeling you get when you’re living in survival mode.
See, our bodies are ancient. They don’t know what a “credit score” is. They only know survival. When money gets tight, your lizard brain thinks, “Oh no, the food supply is gone. We are going to die.”
So it dumps a truckload of cortisol (stress hormone) into your system. If this happens once, fine. But if you’re like I was—living paycheck to paycheck, constantly juggling bills—you are marinating in that stress cocktail 24/7.
Eventually, your body starts screaming.
Here are the weirdest ways my body told me I was broke (and how I fixed them).
The Body Map: Where Are You Holding Your Money Anxiety?
I’ve talked to so many people about this, and it’s crazy how consistent it is. We all seem to store our money fears in the same spots. Check this out and see if it rings a bell.

1. The “TMJ” Jaw Clench (The “I’m So Mad” Spot)
What it feels like: You wake up with a headache, or your jaw clicks when you eat. What it actually is: This was my big one. I was literally gritting my teeth to get through the month. It’s suppressed anger. I was mad at myself for spending too much, mad at my job for paying too little, and I was locking it all in my jaw. The Fix: You have to let the sound out. I know it sounds weird, but check out the “Voo” sound exercise I wrote about in [Article #1: How to calm financial anxiety]. It stopped my grinding in like, three days.
2. The Heavy Shoulders (The Atlas Complex)
What it feels like: Your shoulders are practically touching your ears. You feel like you’re carrying a backpack full of rocks. What it actually is: Burden. If you’re the one everyone relies on—or if you’re hiding your debt from your partner—you are carrying the weight of the world. Your body is bracing for impact. The Fix: Shake it off. Literally. Stand up and shake your arms like a wet dog. Animals do this after they escape a predator to get the adrenaline out. It works.
3. The “Knot” in the Stomach (The Shame Spot)
What it feels like: Nausea, bloating, or just a constant tight feeling in your gut, especially when you open a bill. What it actually is: This is your Solar Plexus chakra (your power center). Money shame punches you right here. When I was deep in debt, I felt sick every time I logged into my bank. My body was rejecting the reality I was seeing. The Fix: Put a warm hand on your belly and breathe into the hand. Don’t suck it in. Let your belly get big. Tell your gut, “I am safe right now.”
4. The Lower Back Ache (The Survival Spot)
What it feels like: A dull, dragging ache right above your hips. What it actually is: This is the classic “Root Chakra” spot. Your lower back supports your whole body, just like money supports your life. When your financial foundation is shaky, your physical foundation gets shaky too. The Fix: Go barefoot. Walk on grass or dirt. You need to get out of your head and feel the ground under your feet.
The Vicious Cycle (Don’t Get Stuck Here!)
Here is the trap I fell into, and I want to save you from it:
- I stressed about money.
- My back went out.
- I couldn’t work as hard because I was in pain.
- I made less money.
- I stressed MORE about money.
It’s a loop. And you can’t break it by just “working harder.” You have to treat the pain and the fear at the same time.
How I Started Healing (Without Winning the Lottery)
I didn’t heal my back pain by paying off all my debt overnight. That took years.
I healed the pain by changing how I reacted to the debt.
I started a little ritual. Before I paid a bill, I would check in with my body. Was my jaw clenched? Were my shoulders up?
I’d take 30 seconds to breathe. I’d drop my shoulders. I’d say, “Okay, this is just a bill. It’s not a tiger. I’m okay.”
And slowly, the pain started to fade.
Try This Tonight
If you’re reading this and your neck is stiff or your stomach hurts, try this before you go to sleep tonight.
Lie down in bed. Start at your toes. Squeeze them as hard as you can for 5 seconds, then let go. Imagine the financial stress dripping out of your toes. Do your calves next. Then your thighs. Your butt. Your belly. Your fists. Your face.
Squeeze the fear, then release it.
Tell your body: “We did enough today. We can put the money worries down for the night.”
You deserve to rest, my friend. Even if your bank account isn’t perfect yet.
Heal the body first. The budget gets a lot easier when you aren’t in pain.
